Delos WELL Living Lab China

A design concept submitted for the call for proposals from a select number of design firms in 2017.

Located in a preselected site, the call for designs requested for the design teams to use the minimal information provided on the spec office building design (unbuilt) selected to reflect the core mission of Delos' Living Labs, and demonstrate an intricate understanding of the opportunity to create a living lab facility in Bejing for the study of residential and office environments in China.

To answer this charge, it was critical that the design concept reimagine both the interior first demonstration floor, and the exterior site environment.  The building required the repositioning of the circulation elements, integration of vestibules and filtration elements, and the expansion of the vision of the interior to respond to a newly created community focused site environment.  The site development also provided critical elements of design necessary for drawing in visitors to the demonstration floor, a space for community, and elements for support of the study participants as well as Delos staff workers on site.  This additionally enabled a repatterning of site traffic to provide separate experiences for study participants from those of visitors or office workers and lab technicians.

AWARENESS + MANAGEMENT

Mitigation of infiltration is managed with the addition of an orienting vestibule.  Sensors on exterior doors in the education area remind occupants to, and demonstrate the benefit of, responsible engagement with the permeable exterior membrane.

THE EXTERIOR AMPHITHEATRE

The engagement of the greater landscape provides space for teaching, gathering, and engagement. Plantings provide visual engagement with air movement and natural air filtration.  Exterior air monitors would allow occupants to monitor this environment relative to the interior.
